Holmes has spent years exploring the human figure in a variety of materials from plastics to marble: clay, cast concrete, plaster, fiberglass, and bronze. Marble is his preferred choice of material.

"The figure looks its best in marble! No other material retains the sensuality, and the planned foresight required by a sculptor to make a work of art that has so much tradition and cultural value that engages the human form"

Holmes' sculptures are carved portions of nude figures highlighting a torso, a back or a bust. He also sculpts full figures. Distinctive to his work is his retention of the original marble surface together with some saw marks and other working traces which impart a contractual focus of  interest and depth to the piece.

He is able to sketch his figure into the block with uncanny accuracy. The results are precise and graphic with attention to minute details. His latest trend is to provide subtle coloration to the statue through techniques he is still developing.

The marble he uses for the sculptures is from Marble, Colorado. It is white and has a uniform, small crystal structure. Colorado marble has been used extensively for buildings and monuments in Washington D.C., Denver and other cities. It is currently being used nationally and internationally on a limited bases.
